The HATS LEVEL III Awareness programme was introduced with a welcome speech delivered by the Principal Investigator and Head moderator, Dr. Naresh Gupta, Director Professor, Dept. of Medicine, MAMC. All participants (doctors i.e. undergraduate) were being addressed about the significance of the awareness programme, along with a description of the achievements in haemophilia treatment at our Haemophilia Day Care Centre (HDCC).

To assess the subject knowledge of the participants, a pre-assessment test was being conducted through individual questionnaire, which consisted of 10 questions to be answered. At the end of 10minutes, the questionnaires were collected and secured for evaluation.

: The second session was delivered by Dr. Sunita Aggarwal, Associate Professor, Dept. of Medicine, MAMC. The speech was focused particularly on Haemophilia and its clinical overview. A brief knowledge upon haemophilia, its demographic data and  prevalence rate, inheritance medium, pathophysiology, clinical severity, clinical manifestations (i.e. musculoskeletal bleeds, hemophilic arthropathy, hemorrhages and intra-cranial bleeds), disease burden, laboratory features, carrier detection and genetic counseling along with prenatal diagnosis. Overall, the speech had a great impact and enlightened the subject knowledge of the participants to a further level.

Dr. A.K. Mittal delivered a talk session on Haemophilia and its treatment.  The speech covered broad topics under haemophilia treatment, comprehensive care, PRICE therapy, medical care through do’s and don’ts, factor replacement therapy, dosage calculation, recombinant factor concentrates, desmopressin, tranexamic acid, medical dental problems, orthopedic-trauma,  fractures, corrective surgeries, appendicitis, hematuria and dealing with psychiatry and  social issues.

After the speech sessions, Dr. Sartaj Ali and a team of HDCC staff accompanied the participants to the HDCC to acquaint them with real life scenario of haemophilia. At HDCC the participants met and interacted with new patients living with haemophilia, along with the older cases manifesting clinical complications related to CNS and joints bleeds. The participating doctors were also trained about infusion methods of FVIII and FIX factor concentrates and the various modalities of treatment. Dr. Monika Sharma the treating physiotherapist at HDCC, enumerated and displayed the various gadgets and physiotherapic equipment (i.e. ice-making machine, ultrasonic pain reduction machine,  shoulder wheel, cycle, putties, theraband and many others) at HDCC meant for rehabilitation and deliverance of improved quality of life for haemophilic patients. Lastly, a laboratory visit was being made, were the participants were briefed about the automated coagulometer, manual kit based testing cell counter, scientific freezers, RT-PCR.

A post assessment test was conducted after the speech and visit session to evaluate the progress of the programme through the same questionnaire circulated earlier. Finally, the programme ended with a vote of thanks being delivered by Dr. Naresh Gupta, after which refreshment were served to all the participants.

Conclusion:

The Hemophilia training and awareness programme conducted for the doctors on 30th May 2013 was a very one successful both in terms of educating and for providing exposure to the patients living with hemophilia. The invited doctors were keen to explore about hemophilia and its treatment modalities. A pre-assessment and a post-assessment test also proved to be beneficial in testing the knowledge achieved through the programme. There was a positive response in the post-assessment test, which acclaims the goal of the programme. Also they expressed their interest and requested to organize such educational training programme to broaden the horizon of tomorrow’s clinical industry.
